Sophie Deliss, calligrapher and teacher

Why did I prefer painting and Chinese calligraphy?

Paper is receptive, warm and absorbent.
Every gesture leaves a trace that cannot be retracted. It allows for a simple expression, a contact with things.

The brush contains a reserve of ink with shades of tones, it modulates the stroke as you tilt it, raise it, press it...

The bamboo becomes hot and dances as much in the painter’s mind as on the leaf. The trees express themselves, the water flows with sweetness or vivacity, the calligraphy fills the sheet, the spirit and the brush capture together moments of life.

The ink stick is crushed on a stone, it is a time to return to a calm, before painting or calligraphing.
